SB 537 -- BOONE COUNTY COUNSELOR
SPONSOR: Jacob (Byrd)
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Judiciary by a vote of 18 to 0.
This bill authorizes the Boone County Commission to impose a
civil fine of not more than $1,000 for misdemeanor county
ordinance violations, and requires the county counselor, rather
than the county prosecuting attorney, to prosecute these
violations. Fines collected pursuant to the bill will be paid
into the county general fund and used to pay for the cost of
enforcement of the ordinances.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the county prosecutor is too
busy to prosecute certain misdemeanors and the bill will allow
the county counselor to prosecute those violations.
Testifying for the bill was Representative Harris (23) for
Senator Jacob.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
